Vancouver businessman expected to buy NHL’s Dallas Stars
Dallas, TX, United States (AHN Sports) – Vancouver business magnate Tom Gaglardi is expected to acquire the cash-strapped Dallas Stars, a source close to situation reported Friday.
Gaglardi will reportedly shell out around $250 million and at least 50 percent of lease to the American Airlines Arena in an effort to purchase the money-losing Stars.
However, the potential sale faces several requirements, including the approval by bankruptcy court of Fort Worth and the creditors of current owner Tom Hicks.
The Stars lost millions of dollars a year under Hicks, who also sold the Texas Rangers and shares of the Liverpool soccer club.
Still, the source added the structure of the deal nears completion and expected to be approved by the NHL in July.
The Stars, who missed the postseason for the third straight year, could benefit under new management after slightly improving their record to 42-29-11 during the 2010-2011 NHL season.

Fish deaths place Philippine milkfish industry in crisis
Dagupan, Pangasinan, Philippines (AHN) – The double whammy that recently hit the Philippine aquaculture industry has placed the country’s milkfish growers in crisis.
Fish pen operators in Binmaley and Mangaldan in Pangasinan complained on Thursday that they have lost at least 80 percent of their sales due to massive fish deaths that hit the two western Pangasinan municipalities.
Aside from dead fish stocks, sale of milkfish not affected by the fishkill has also gone down because of fears that the cultured marine products sold may be contaminated.
It did not help the milkfish growers and vendors that some unscrupulous persons took advantage of the situation by trying to pass off diseased (aka double dead) milkfish as freshly harvested following the seizure by health and police officials in Pangasinan of 10 trucks of rotting milkfish from the towns of Anda and Bolinao.
Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Officer-in-Charge for the Calabarzon Esmeralda Paz Manalang estimated fish losses in Batangas as of June 1 at 972.6 metric tons valued at $1.77 million (PHP 76.586 million).
Although the bulk of the fish deaths were milkfish, the low levels of oxygen at Taal Lake also caused the death of other fish species in the lake. Malacanang blamed the Batangas fish kill to overstocking and ordered Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo to dismantle illegal fish cages in the lake.
Local government officials denied the overstocking charge. Batangas Vice Governor Jose Antonio Leviste III placed the towns of Talisay. Laurel, Agoncillo, San Nicolas, Alitagtag, Cuenca and Sta. Teresita under a state calamity and allowed the release of $231,000 (PHP 10 million) assistance to affected residents.
To help the Batangas fish pen operators recover from the crisis, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said on Thursday that the government will help improve oxygen levels in the lake by distributing about 50 water pumps in Batangas and one million milkfish and St. Peter’s fish fingerlings to both Pangasinan and Batangas cultured fish growers.
